97-365: Kibbelinge

04-07-10 | Snapped by Sanni | Filed under Luis, Zeeland, food |

[ Captain Luis proudly presents "Kibbelinge" - his favorite food whenever we're in the Netherlnds.
The beer battered fish filets are served with sauce remoulade. We also indulged ourselves with French fries (sate sauce and mayonnaise... how I love the combination) and frikandel (sausage). Yes, we were hungry indeed after spending a few hours of treasure hunting on the beach. ]

77-365: Arabic

03-18-10 | Snapped by Sanni | Filed under food |

[ Arabic is a Persian vegetarian delicacy comparable to falafel.
Back in the days I lived in DO I did have to have one at least bi-weekly, especially while I still lived a vegetarian lifestyle.

Tonight we indulged ourselves with Arabic's after we went home from the hospital.
Spending hours with my mom, who feels better and also looks healthier, followed by soul food, followed by a glass of white wine... I guess tonight I will sleep well for the first time in ages... ]

42-365: Finally Figs

02-11-10 | Snapped by Sanni | Filed under food, irresistible stuff |

[ A few days ago my friend Mrs Lifecruiser shared Big Dig Fig in France with us. Part of the mouth-watering post was - you guessed it - a delicious looking macro of a luscious fig.
The big-fig-macro really gave me the kick. I was drooling all over my macbook literally. It felt like I could smell the fig and even taste the sweet juice.
Yes, I needed to get a fig asap - preferably the morning after.

Today, 12 (!!!) days later, I finally found some figs in a grocery store. Prize was € 1,19 for ONE
- but I couldn't resist buying some.

Did you hear the "Oooooh"s and "Aaaaaah"s and "Hmmmm"s and "Omnomnom"s a few minutes ago? That was us, enjoying the terrific figs after dinner. ]

23-365: La Galette des Rois

01-23-10 | Snapped by Sanni | Filed under food, traditions |

[ One of the reasons I loved the job at the catering company I worked for ages ago so much was I learned a lot about traditions from foreign countries near and far. Nico, one of the French cooks, introduced "galette de rois" to us. Every year around Epiphany he baked the famous king cake using his mom's secret recipe. The delicious cake is made of puff pastry and frangipane. A single bean or figurine gets baked inside the cake. Whoever stumbles upon the figurine / bean will be crowned king for the remaining holiday. The king also holds the next "Three Kings Party".

While he shared the tradition with us, Nico never revealed the recipe - and ended up baking at least 4 or 5 king cakes during January.

I bet you can imagine I was so thrilled to read a post over at my friend Claudie's blog about my beloved king cake. Besides explaining the tradition, Claudie also shared a surprisingly easy to bake recipe for galette des rois and some funny facts.

We baked our very first home-made king cake today. So much fun. Of course Luis couldn't wait. He crowned himself before the cake was placed inside the oven. His enthronement was well deserved - he also found the trinket in his piece of cake.

The whole family is in king cake heaven - thank you so much, Claudie! ]

12-365: Crock Pot Cooking #1

01-12-10 | Snapped by Sanni | Filed under crock pot, food |

[ Inspired by FB status updates by my dear friends Anndi and Mo, I felt I couldn't live a day longer without a crock pot. Sometimes a girl has to do what a girl has to do - my very first crock pot was ordered the day before yesterday.
After the order was placed I kept on waiting not too patiently, hoping to survive another day or four or so without said pot... erm... I mean crock pot.
Chances were little the pot would arrive until Saturday.
See, the streets around here still make me feel like living in the middle of winter wonderland instead of a surburb of a huge city (no one with brains will name this metropolis, honestly... although it is huge enough to be one).
I bet you can imagine my huge surprise when the ubersexy UPS man delivered my crock pot today.
I could have kissed him. I would have kissed him if I hadn't been too curious to try out my new slow cooker. Instead of kissing, I rushed inside, opened the fridge and grabbed some food greeting me from inside. Original plans involved cooking Anndis world-famous Guiness Beef Stew, but since I didn't do the necessary grocery shopping I went for sauerkraut, apple sauce, lightly smoked pork loin, bacon and Mettwurst.

After all ingredients were tossed inside and a few spices were added, my new best friend (the crock pot, not the UPS guy) did the rest. When I came back home from the kindergarten, the whole home just smelled delish. Meat and veggies have never been tastier!
I see a lot of crock pot cooking coming to this household...

Special thanks go out to Anndi, Mo, Desert Songbird, Tisha and Ian for all the yummy recipes and tips they sent my way. I will try and enjoy every single recipe.

Speaking of Ian... Happy Birthday, babe! Have a great day!!! ]
