[ Back in 1998, while my parents, the ex and I were on a vacation in the Dominican Republic, we also made a trip over the border to Haiti. It's been the first and only time we've been to "the other side" of Hispanola. We were taken with the beauty of Haiti on the one side, but also couldn't get over the poverty of the country and people - and their hospitality granted. Besides many unforgettable memories I brought this little blue painting home with me. The artist, a young Haitian, painted it especially for us. Whenever I passed the painting it made me smile and I crossed my fingers for the boy to able to implement the dreams he was talking about on the beach...
While preparing dinner yesterday evening, the news reported about the earthquake coming over Haiti with a catastrophic magnitude of 7.0 M, centred about 25Â km (ca 16Â miles) from Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince. According to the International Red Cross as many as 3 million people have been affected by the earthquake, with as many as 500.000 deaths likely. The series of aftershocks, mostly come with magnitudes 5,0 and 5,9. In addition to major landmarks, the hospitals were significantly damaged or destroyed. The streets are full of hurt, bloody and homeless people,
without food and water, desperately searching for their family and friends in the chunks of concrete that buried the city.
Port au Prince looks like a theatre of war...
We can't imagine what these people are going through. We have a roof over our heads, there's plenty of food and fresh water - and, most important - we have us. Our "problems", be it finacial worries or relationship problems - you name it, now seem to be so insignificant and small.
I feel ashamed to even have complained about them.
Our hearts go out to the poor people. They are in our thoughts and prayers. We also donated to the International Red Cross. But still... it feels like not enough by half. ]
