What do you think?

I talked about leaving Germany and moving to Spain yesterday. This is a huge step for all of us - although Frank and I always shared the dream of “direction: south”… owning a nice (more or less) little Finca in Southern Europe, ideally Mallorca, Spain.

We have contacted several estate agents during the last months, but didn’t find the “dream home” so far.
A few days ago we recieved a special offer for a Finca / cottage in Alaro (Mallorca, Spain): The dream home. The Finca offers 6 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms (one en suite), 2 large living rooms, an American kitchen, 100 m² terraces, a huge pool, a well, several parking places, etc. on a 6,000 m² property:

That’s exactly what we’ve been dreaming of. The only thing we’d need to change is: The little beauty comes ready-furnished. This is unusual for us Germans. We already have LOTS (in other words: too much) of furniture on our own. The agent says it’s a negotiable matter.

That’s the PROs… there are also a few other things on my mind:

Leaving friends and family… this will be hard. Of course, the new home offers lots of space for visitors - and all our friends are already planning their vacations at our new home busily.

My parents also reacted much cooler than I did. I was so scared to tell them about our plans and even more surprised by their reaction. I was told this is the best thing that could happen to them. Actually we meet once or twice a month for a day. When moving they are planning 12 vacation trips a year, coming to Mallorca once a month for a week. Both are looking forward to 12 yearly vacations, plus seeing us for an extended time. *huh*

In addition of leaving our family and friends we’ ll have to sell everything we own here to let this dream come true… leave our current home behind, sell the apartment in Neuss, give away our fun car - the beloved Mini Cooper Convertible *sigh* to supplement our seed money. *sad*

Did I hear the word “job” coming to your mind? Frank and I are both self-employed, not location-dependent. We can do our jobs from whereever we are. We’re also searching for a little shop to let this other dream come true. *bubble*

So, what do you think, peeps?

Would this be a huge step for you? Did you ever move to another country (the distance is comparable to moving across 3 states for the US citizens)? I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences!
Thanks for sharing in advance! *coffee* *cake*

And now…
… our moment of Homer J.:

Homer: Ah, beer. The cause of and the solution to all of life’s problems.

    Hi Sanni—- I actually moved to France just about two years ago from sunny San Diego in So. Cal. I have was born and raised a Californian but always dreamed of living abroad… I have done much traveling in my life so far and love to learn about other cultures and learn different languages… For me, moving to France wasn’t too difficult- it took me about a month or two to “adust” but I did go through a short period of the traditional ‘culutre shock’ that everyone goes through.. I LOVEEEEEE living outside the U.S. and have many expat. friends as well as many French ones… I can’t see myslef living back in the U.S. again– France is my home now and I will because a citizen in another 2 years- I will not give up my American citizenship, of course!! Come visit my blog for more views of France…
    Also, thanks for stopping by last week… I hope is going well with Mommyhood.. Always fun reading your blog.. All my best to you and your family…. Bizzzzzzz, Leesa

    A true story: My mom and dad were offered an opportunity to buy property on Harbor Boulevard in Anaheim in 1950. At the time, it was still pretty much orange groves and small farming. Today? Well, it’s right where Disneyland sits!
    Do you think they kicked themselves just a little?
    Go for the gusto, my dear! You guys have each other, are assured of family visits, and you’re marvelously talented! Not only that, but you could return to Germany at any time. The home is absolutely breathtaking and I know you would truly make it your heart and home.
    ~~~Blessings~~~
    I’ve never even thought about moving to another country. The close I came was moving from one state to another.
    But they still spoke my language and had the same culture as me, so that wasn’t like moving to an entire new country!
    But if this is the dream, and you’ve found the dream house, then I say you should go for it!
